Ottawa earned a strong overall score of 68.77, placing it just behind cities like Copenhagen, which topped the list with 76.67.
What stands out is not that Ottawa dominates a single category, but that it performs consistently well across all metrics, which ultimately pushed it into the global top tier.
From “Boring” to Best: Ottawa’s Reputation Shift
Not long ago, Ottawa was frequently mocked for its lack of nightlife and excitement. It even topped “most boring city” lists in the past decade. In response, city officials took steps to change that perception, including appointing a nightlife commissioner, Mathieu Grondin, to improve after-dark culture.

Average monthly net salaries were estimated around $5,500 CAD, reflecting economic stability, even if not the highest in the country.
The Reality Check: Is It Truly Affordable?
Despite the positive ranking, there are some caveats. Wage estimates vary widely. While the report suggests high average earnings, other sources place Ottawa’s average salary closer to $64,000 annually, which can limit savings potential for young renters.
Additionally, youth unemployment was calculated at 13.8%, using national data rather than city-specific figures, which may slightly distort the local picture.
Still, compared to the skyrocketing costs in cities like Toronto and Vancouver, Ottawa remains relatively manageable.
A Different Kind of Appeal
Unlike startup-driven hubs or entertainment-heavy cities, Ottawa’s strength lies in consistency. It may not lead in excitement or innovation, but it provides:
