A major cross-border firearms investigation has led to criminal charges against three men accused of attempting to smuggle nearly 90 guns into Canada, according to U.S. federal authorities. The case, which unfolded after a routine traffic stop in New York State, has drawn attention from both American and Canadian law enforcement agencies because of the large number of weapons allegedly involved and the international connections of the suspects.
Federal investigators say the seizure included dozens of firearms, several of which had reportedly been stolen, making the operation one of the more significant gun trafficking investigations recently uncovered along the Canada–United States border corridor.
The arrests were announced publicly by FBI Assistant Director in Charge James C. Barnacle Jr. in a news release issued Friday. Authorities allege the suspects were transporting the firearms through New York with the intention of smuggling them into Canada.
Traffic Stop on Interstate 90 Sparked the Investigation
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, the investigation began on or around May 7 when New York State Police observed a white Ford Explorer allegedly committing several traffic violations near Interstate 90.
Troopers initiated a traffic stop and began questioning the three occupants inside the vehicle. Authorities later identified them as 22-year-old Malik Bromfield, 25-year-old Faizan Ali, and 22-year-old Kamal Salman.
During the interaction, investigators said the men provided inconsistent and evasive explanations when officers attempted to determine the purpose of their travel. Those suspicious responses reportedly prompted police to continue their investigation at the scene.
Law enforcement officials stated that the behavior of the occupants immediately raised concerns among officers conducting the stop. Investigators claim that several details provided by the suspects did not match, leading authorities to suspect possible criminal activity beyond the alleged traffic violations.
Expired Pakistani Driving Permit Found During Search
Authorities allege that Faizan Ali consented to a roadside search conducted by officers during the traffic stop. During that search, investigators reportedly discovered an expired Pakistani National Driving Permit concealed on his person.
According to federal prosecutors, the permit had been issued to an Afghan national under a different name. Investigators have not yet publicly explained how the document may relate to the firearms investigation, but its discovery reportedly increased officers’ suspicions at the scene.
The roadside encounter quickly escalated after police called in a canine unit to inspect the vehicle. Officials stated that the police dog alerted officers to the possible presence of narcotics inside the SUV.
Although investigators have not publicly confirmed the discovery of drugs, the canine alert provided officers with grounds to conduct a deeper examination of the vehicle and its contents.
Officers Discover Large Cache of Firearms in Heavy Suitcase
During the preliminary search, officers allegedly discovered what authorities described as an “unusually heavy” suitcase. Inside, investigators claim they uncovered a large cache of firearms.
Additional guns were reportedly found elsewhere in the vehicle as officers continued their search.
Federal authorities say the total seizure amounted to nearly 90 firearms. Investigators also alleged that at least 17 of those weapons had previously been reported stolen.
Law enforcement officials have not yet publicly disclosed the exact types of firearms recovered or whether any of the guns were modified. However, prosecutors described the discovery as a significant seizure tied to an alleged firearms trafficking operation.
The case has intensified concerns among authorities about illegal gun smuggling routes operating between the United States and Canada. American officials have repeatedly warned that firearms purchased or stolen in the United States are often trafficked across the northern border and later linked to violent crimes in Canadian cities.
Suspects Identified as Canadian Citizens and Pakistani National
Federal prosecutors said Malik Bromfield and Kamal Salman are Canadian citizens. Authorities identified Faizan Ali as a Pakistani national.
Investigators also stated that Salman holds dual citizenship in both the United States and Jordan in addition to his Canadian citizenship.
The international backgrounds of the suspects have added another layer of complexity to the investigation, which now involves multiple agencies from both sides of the border.
Officials have not publicly confirmed whether the accused men knew each other prior to the alleged smuggling attempt or whether investigators believe they were connected to a larger trafficking network.
Hamilton Police Link One Suspect to Fatal Motorcycle Investigation
The investigation gained additional attention after Hamilton police in Ontario announced that Faizan Ali was already wanted in connection with a separate criminal case dating back several years.
According to Hamilton police, Ali was being sought in relation to the death of a motorcyclist in May 2021.
Authorities in Hamilton confirmed Friday that Ali had been arrested by New York State Police near Liberty, New York, along with two other Hamilton residents.
Canadian investigators alleged that a later search of the vehicle uncovered a substantial number of stolen and illegal firearms.
Police have not yet publicly explained whether the firearm investigation has any connection to the earlier motorcycle fatality investigation involving Ali.
Serious Federal Charges Filed Against All Three Men
All three suspects now face multiple federal charges in the United States connected to the alleged transportation and attempted smuggling of firearms.
According to prosecutors, the charges include smuggling goods from the United States, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.
The accused men are also facing charges related to unlicensed dealing in firearms, an offence punishable by up to five years in prison.
Additional charges include transporting stolen firearms in interstate commerce and unlawful possession of firearms. Each of those offences carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison under federal law.
Authorities emphasized that the charges are allegations and that the defendants remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Additional Firearm Charge Filed Against Malik Bromfield
Federal prosecutors also announced an additional charge against Malik Bromfield.
According to court documents, Bromfield has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by an alien. That offence carries a significantly higher maximum sentence of 15 years in prison if convicted.
Investigators have not yet publicly released further details explaining why Bromfield faces that separate firearm-related charge.
The defendants are expected to appear in federal court as the investigation continues.
Cross-Border Gun Smuggling Remains Growing Concern
The case highlights ongoing concerns surrounding firearms trafficking between the United States and Canada.
Canadian authorities have repeatedly pointed to illegal firearms smuggling as a major contributor to gun violence across several provinces, particularly in Ontario and British Columbia. Many of the guns recovered at Canadian crime scenes are believed to originate in the United States, where firearms can often be obtained more easily.
Law enforcement agencies on both sides of the border have expanded cooperation in recent years to combat organized gun trafficking operations. Joint investigations frequently involve the FBI, U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and local police departments.
Officials say traffickers often attempt to move firearms through interstate highways before crossing into Canada through border checkpoints or remote crossing areas.
Interstate 90, where the traffic stop reportedly occurred, is one of the major transportation routes connecting several northeastern states with border regions leading into Canada.
Investigators Continue Examining Source of the Firearms
Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed where the nearly 90 firearms were allegedly obtained.
However, investigators are expected to trace the origins of each recovered weapon to determine whether they were purchased legally, stolen from licensed owners, or connected to other criminal investigations.
The revelation that 17 firearms had reportedly been stolen could potentially expand the investigation further if additional suspects or trafficking networks are identified.
Federal prosecutors may also seek to determine whether the accused intended to sell the weapons on the black market after entering Canada.
Experts say illegal firearms trafficking operations can generate substantial profits because guns often sell at significantly higher prices on the illicit market in Canada compared to the United States.
Federal Authorities Promise Aggressive Prosecution
American law enforcement officials signaled that they intend to pursue the case aggressively.
In announcing the arrests, federal authorities stressed the dangers posed by illegal firearms trafficking and emphasized their commitment to disrupting smuggling operations before weapons reach criminal markets.
Officials noted that large-scale gun trafficking investigations often involve extensive coordination between local police, federal agents, border enforcement officers, and international partners.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges or arrests in the future.
Court Proceedings Expected in Coming Weeks
The accused men are expected to face federal court proceedings in the United States as prosecutors continue presenting evidence connected to the alleged smuggling attempt.
Legal experts say the seriousness of the charges means the defendants could face lengthy prison sentences if convicted on multiple counts.
At this stage, prosecutors have not publicly indicated whether plea negotiations are underway or whether additional evidence may be introduced as part of the broader investigation.
Meanwhile, Canadian authorities are expected to monitor the proceedings closely because of the alleged attempt to transport the firearms across the border into Canada.
