Canadians receiving retirement benefits are seeing a welcome increase this month, as Old Age Security payments rise in response to the cost of living. With updated maximum amounts now in effect, eligible seniors could notice a larger deposit in their bank accounts starting April 2026.
The pension program, administered by Service Canada, remains one of the most important sources of income for older Canadians, especially those without significant workplace pensions.
Who Qualifies for Old Age Security in Canada
To receive OAS, individuals must be at least 65 years old. Eligibility depends primarily on residency rather than employment history.
For those living in Canada, you must be either a citizen or legal resident at the time your application is approved and have lived in the country for at least 10 years after turning 18.
If you live abroad, the requirements are stricter. You must have been a citizen or legal resident before leaving Canada and have lived in the country for at least 20 years as an adult.
One notable advantage of OAS is that you can receive it even if you’ve never worked or are still employed, making it different from contribution-based pensions.

CPP and OAS Payments Set for April 28 with Increased Benefits
New Maximum OAS Payment Amounts for April to June 2026
The federal government adjusts OAS payments quarterly to reflect inflation. For the April to June 2026 period, the maximum monthly amounts have increased:
- Seniors aged 65 to 74 can receive up to $743.05 per month
- Seniors aged 75 and older can receive up to $817.36 per month
The higher payment for those 75+ reflects additional financial pressures faced by older seniors.
Actual payment amounts may vary depending on factors such as income level and years of residence in Canada.
April 2026 OAS Payment Date Confirmed
The next OAS payment is scheduled for April 28, 2026. Those enrolled in direct deposit will see the funds automatically deposited into their bank accounts on that date.
For recipients who still receive cheques, delivery may take a few extra days depending on mailing times.
How You Will Receive Your OAS Money
Payments are issued either through direct deposit or mailed cheque.
Direct deposit is the faster and more reliable option, allowing funds to be transferred directly into your account in Canada or even internationally in supported countries.
If you haven’t set up direct deposit, Service Canada will mail your payment near the end of the month, which can lead to delays compared to electronic transfers.
What This Increase Means for Seniors
With inflation continuing to impact everyday expenses, even modest increases in monthly benefits can make a difference. The latest adjustment ensures that OAS keeps pace with rising costs, helping seniors maintain purchasing power.
As future quarterly updates are reviewed, there is also the possibility of further increases later in 2026, depending on economic conditions and inflation trends.
