Canadians now have a new way to renew their passports as the federal government officially launches nationwide online passport renewal services. The move marks a major step in modernizing passport processing and gives eligible citizens another option beyond traditional mail and in-person applications.

Canada Introduces Online Passport Renewal Nationwide
The federal government has expanded online passport renewal services to eligible Canadians across the country. Previously available only through limited testing phases, the online system is now open nationwide through the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada portal.
This launch creates a third renewal method for Canadians, joining the existing in-person and mail-in options that have been used for years.
Officials say the online platform is intended to improve convenience for Canadians who prefer digital services and want to avoid travelling to passport offices or mailing physical documents.
However, the government is carefully managing the launch by limiting how many applications can be submitted each day.
Daily Application Cap Introduced for Online Renewals
The online passport renewal system will only accept up to 1,500 applications per day during the early rollout phase.
To manage demand and maintain system performance, the daily applications are divided into two separate intake windows. Half of the available spots open at 7 a.m. Eastern Time, while the remaining spots become available at 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
Once the daily limit is reached, applicants must wait until the next intake window or following day to submit their renewal request.
The government says the cap is intended to ensure the online service remains stable while more Canadians begin using the platform.
Who Can Use Canada’s Online Passport Renewal Service?
Not every passport holder will qualify for online renewal. The federal government has established strict eligibility requirements for applicants who want to use the digital system.
Applicants Must Have a Regular Adult Passport
Only Canadians with a regular adult passport are eligible for online renewal. Special passports, temporary passports, and child passports are not included in the online renewal system.
Passport Must Have Been Issued Within the Last 15 Years
To qualify, applicants must already possess a passport that was issued within the past 15 years. Canadians with passports older than that period may need to apply through traditional renewal or new application processes.
Passport Must Be Expiring Soon or Recently Expired
The online system is intended mainly for standard renewals. Eligible passports must either already be expired or approaching expiration within the next six months.
Current Passport Is Cancelled Immediately
One of the most important conditions is that the current passport becomes invalid as soon as the online application is submitted.
This means applicants can no longer use their existing passport for travel after completing the renewal request online.
Because of this automatic cancellation process, the government warns Canadians to avoid using the online system if they have upcoming travel plans.
Upcoming Travel Can Disqualify Applicants
Canadians planning to travel soon may not be able to use the online renewal option.
The government says anyone needing to travel within 20 business days is not eligible for online passport renewal. Since the current passport is cancelled immediately after submission, applicants could face serious travel disruptions if they apply too close to a departure date.
Travellers with urgent plans are encouraged to use in-person passport services instead, particularly if emergency or express processing may be required.
Strict Rules for Digital Passport Photos
Applicants using the online system must upload a digital passport photo that meets detailed technical standards.
The government has outlined strict specifications regarding image size, dimensions, lighting, resolution, aspect ratio, and background requirements. Photos that fail to meet these standards could lead to delays or rejected applications.
Digital images must also remain clear and suitable for official identification purposes.
The technical photo requirements are part of broader efforts to ensure online applications maintain the same security and verification standards as traditional passport renewals.
Processing Times Remain Important for Travellers
Although the application method is changing, passport processing times remain similar to existing renewal services.
The federal government says online passport renewals can take up to 20 business days to process. This estimate does not include mailing or delivery time for the new passport.
Applicants are being advised to plan ahead and leave extra time before any international travel.
Delivery delays or higher application volumes could further extend the timeline during busy periods.
Refund Policy Remains in Place for Delays
Canadians may still qualify for refunds if processing times exceed government service standards.
Officials say applicants can request a refund if their passport renewal is not completed within 30 business days. This policy applies regardless of whether the application was submitted online, by mail, or in person.
The refund measure is intended to hold passport services accountable for meeting published timelines.
Passport Renewal Fees Stay the Same
The launch of online renewal services does not change passport fees for Canadians living in the country.
Adult passport renewal costs remain:
10-Year Adult Passport
The fee for a 10-year adult passport remains $163.50 for applicants residing in Canada.
5-Year Adult Passport
The fee for a five-year adult passport remains $122.50.
The government says online applicants will pay the same rates as those renewing through mail or in-person services.
Digital Services Continue Expanding Across Canada
