A mystery dark money group has suddenly injected millions of dollars into Michigan’s heated Democratic Senate primary, putting Congresswoman Haley Stevens at the center of a growing political controversy involving immigration enforcement, ICE accountability, outside spending, and speculation about possible links to American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
The mystery dark money group, operating under the name Center for Democratic Priorities, reportedly reserved an estimated $5.3 million worth of television advertising across Michigan media markets. The ads are designed to boost Haley Stevens in the Michigan Senate primary by promoting her efforts to “hold ICE accountable” and challenge immigration enforcement abuses.
The sudden wave of spending has intensified scrutiny of the Michigan Senate primary, especially as Stevens faces attacks from Democratic rivals over campaign donations connected to ICE contractors and previous congressional votes involving immigration enforcement agencies.
Haley Stevens Featured in New ICE Accountability Ad
The new television ad highlights Haley Stevens’ push for stronger federal oversight of immigration enforcement agencies. The ad specifically references legislation introduced by Stevens that would establish an independent special prosecutor to investigate alleged misconduct within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
In the ad, Haley Stevens says:
“This is about accountability for an agency that hasn’t had any.”
The advertisement portrays Stevens as a Democrat willing to challenge ICE and increase federal oversight of immigration enforcement practices. The campaign message appears aimed at progressive Democratic voters in Michigan who are concerned about immigration policies and federal enforcement actions.
The ad campaign is expected to run through the end of May across major Michigan television markets, including Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint, and Traverse City.
Mystery Dark Money Group Raises Questions
The biggest controversy surrounding the $5.3 million media buy is the identity and funding source behind the Center for Democratic Priorities.
The organization reportedly has very little public history. Records show the group was registered only recently in Dover, Delaware, a location often associated with political organizations and corporate registrations. As of Saturday morning, the organization reportedly had not yet filed publicly available paperwork with the Federal Election Commission or the Internal Revenue Service.
That lack of transparency has fueled accusations that the group could be operating as a dark money organization designed to influence the Michigan Senate primary without fully disclosing donors.
Political observers immediately began questioning whether the mystery dark money group might have ties to AIPAC or other pro-Israel political networks that have become increasingly active in Democratic primaries nationwide.
Abdul El-Sayed Suggests Possible AIPAC Connection
One of Haley Stevens’ Democratic primary rivals, Abdul El-Sayed, publicly suggested the mystery dark money operation could be linked to AIPAC-backed political spending efforts.
El-Sayed’s campaign pointed to overlapping political consulting connections, particularly involving the firm Waterfront Strategies.
While no direct evidence has publicly confirmed AIPAC involvement, the speculation grew because similar political spending structures have reportedly been used in previous Democratic primaries involving candidates critical of Israeli government policies.
El-Sayed’s spokesperson, Roxie Richner, sharply criticized the outside spending effort, arguing that Michigan voters would reject attempts to influence the Senate race through massive undisclosed funding.
The El-Sayed campaign also argued that AIPAC views Abdul El-Sayed as a political threat because of his criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his opposition to unconditional U.S. aid policies toward Israel.
Previous Michigan Political Spending Fuels Suspicion
Additional scrutiny emerged after reports connected a board officer named “John Jones” from the Center for Democratic Priorities to another political organization called Blue Wave Action.
Blue Wave Action previously spent millions during Michigan’s 13th Congressional District Democratic primary in support of candidates opposing Shri Thanedar challengers.
That earlier spending effort was later reportedly linked to groups associated with AIPAC, including:
- United Democracy Project
- Voters For Responsive Government
Because of those past connections, critics quickly questioned whether the same donor networks may now be active in the Michigan Senate race involving Haley Stevens.
AIPAC did not immediately issue a public response regarding the allegations.
Haley Stevens Faces Pressure Over ICE Votes and Donations
The controversy surrounding the mystery dark money group comes at a difficult time for Haley Stevens politically.
Stevens has recently faced criticism from progressive Democrats over campaign donations connected to companies involved in immigration enforcement operations. Rivals have also attacked her for a House vote in 2025 expressing gratitude to ICE agents.
That congressional resolution also condemned the antisemitic attack in Boulder, Colorado. Stevens has defended the vote by arguing that condemning antisemitic violence remains essential.
Still, critics argue the vote created political vulnerabilities among progressive voters concerned about immigration enforcement practices and ICE operations.
The new ad campaign promoting Haley Stevens as someone willing to “hold ICE accountable” appears designed to counter those criticisms directly.
Mallory McMorrow Also Attacks Stevens
Another Democratic Senate candidate, Mallory McMorrow, also accused outside groups of stepping in to politically protect Haley Stevens.
McMorrow recently criticized Stevens publicly over her immigration-related votes and campaign donations tied to companies supplying equipment to ICE.
Afterward, McMorrow claimed the sudden appearance of the mystery dark money spending campaign was not a coincidence.
According to McMorrow, Stevens’ campaign later updated website language encouraging outside groups to help amplify her message about fighting former President Donald Trump and opposing abuses of power tied to immigration enforcement.
Stevens spokesperson Arik Wolk later stated that Stevens has consistently fought against what the campaign describes as ICE abuses and Trump-era immigration policies.
Michigan Senate Primary Becoming National Political Battleground
The Michigan Democratic Senate primary is rapidly becoming one of the most closely watched Senate contests in the country.
The combination of immigration politics, dark money spending, AIPAC speculation, and progressive divisions inside the Democratic Party has transformed the race into a national political story.
The $5.3 million media buy by the mystery dark money group signals that powerful outside organizations view the Michigan Senate race as critically important.
Political analysts say the controversy could shape voter perceptions not only about Haley Stevens, but also about broader questions involving transparency, outside influence, campaign finance, immigration enforcement, and the growing role of AIPAC-linked spending in Democratic primaries.
As the ads continue airing across Michigan television markets, pressure is expected to grow for more disclosure about who exactly is funding the Center for Democratic Priorities and why such a massive investment is being made in support of Haley Stevens.
